Alberta Separatists make me sick.

They do, they make me feel nauseous. They make me feel weak in the knees. And for some reason, they make me twice as sick as separatists from Quebec. I have spoken about my great disgust for Quebec Separatists before, and they, I hope we can all agree, are a fucking miserable lot.

But why is it that Canada-hating Albertans bug me so? Until very recently I’ve always found them to be a rather novel element to the mainstream variety of Ottawa-loathing Albertacrat. Good for a joke or two, you know. But the recent incline in support for the "movement" has obviously crawled under my skin (and got me fuming at the fingertips!)

I know it’s not a matter of which group’s complaining is more justified. That’s a dumb game. Quebec separatists argue that they have a "distinct culture" which cannot be understood or embraced by any English-speaking Canadian. Thus, they see separation as the only feasible solution to their situation; complete autonomy from the rest of us, to erase a couple centuries of perceived bad blood. Conversely, Albertan separatists argue that too much interference by the federal government has resulted in a huge money siphon from the bountiful plains to the filthy pits of Eastern Canada, where the money is then converted into banquet dinners and a big "fuck you" to the ROC.

Both myths, although based on fragments of truth and factoid, are bogus. They are bogus for reasons which have been enunciated elsewhere ad nauseam. And that is a good thing, for I would be ill-equipped to attempt to do so here again.

But getting back to my original target - separatist scumbags - and why I really, really hate them.

Even though there’s been a surge in this revolting sentiment as of late, I can remember when I saw my very first Alberta Separatist gathering. It happened in Red Deer (circa 2001) when a couple hundred nice young men decided to assemble in the spirit of tearing their country asunder. They were beautifully adorned in black leather swastika garb, and they chanted nifty little jingles that could only lead one to believe that the proposed "Republic of Alberta" would be as diverse and welcoming as its predecessor, with room for people of all shades and colors, from alabaster to albino. I’m telling you, this crowd of overweight, racist pricks really sold the message for me. And I have them to thank that I will forever make the association in my mind, for the rest of my life.

"But Senator, just because you support the wretched notion of Alberta separatism doesn’t mean you’re a racist."

No, it doesn’t. It means you are ready to align yourself with racists to validate some stupid idea you picked up from reading the Calgary Sun. It means that you’re ready to take reactionary steps against the State to which you are subject. It means, you’re prepared to stand against me, as a traitor who doesn’t deserve to take another breath in this country!

Well bring it on!

I hate separatists too. But it makes me even more sad to think that there is such a large chunch of Canada who does not feel at home : (

I'm 100% with you on Alberta Seperatists!!!

I'm a believer that change comes from within therefore you must be in government in order to change it. So Canadians should be doing their part in the political process... volunteer for any party, make the calls, give to your candidate, make MP's accountable, protest, whatever you want but DO SOMETHING!

Seperatists are those spoiled kids who "take their ball and go home" when things don't go their way.

The Western Separatists are amusing. It is not really about WESTERN Alienation, but CONSERVATIVE Alienation. Western Separatists are wankers who should be laughed at until they disappear.

It's a sad situation, as much as I stand on guard for the, I blame the feds for alot of problems in the west. I think there cowards and don't have the balls to visit Alberta and tackle alot of issues that stem from the east that only hurts western relations, gun laws, gay unions, etc. For me its hard to stand up for a guttless government. On the other hand, Seperatists can take this land over my dead body!

We have to squash this movement before it finds something valid to sustain it's exsistence and becomes a real problem.
Also before the American far right finds out it has a dumb cousin it can mate with.
Yes I'm from Alberta but I'll always be Canadian first.

I am an Albertan and a Canadian, although I can see you have strong 'hate' towards the people who are discontented in the Western side of this province. For the record, I do not agree nor diagree with Alberta starting a separtist party. During this election-Did you see any big rallies here to gain votes(not that the conservatives need them here)-but no other party that I am aware of did any form of rally in Central Alberta, anyways.

I was not there for any rallies for support for the Alberta separtists group, however the picture you paint is quite comical. However, I believe it is a way for people, in Alberta, to show that we will not be walked on. We are proud Canadians, however I am also proud of being from Alberta and I love living here.

I also believe anonymous that Alberta is not a dumb enough cousin to 'mate' with the US...from what I have heard separatists would like BC, Alberta and Sask to join forces and do it together. Much like a East and West Berlin, we would then have a East and West Canada. Which really already exists.

Albertans have oil & gas = money, that is what, I think, they are trying to protect-as well as a say in where a big portion of that goes, which now is the federal government, and is spent mostly in the Eastern provinces. This is where the animosity heats up between Eastern and Western Canada.

If the Federal government starts to run out of money, where do you think they will take from first? Alberta is a huge oil and gas 'honeypot' for the government at both federal and provincial levels.

I agree with the fact that the separatists in Quebec have really been a thorn in the side of any government trying to win seats. They have made it possible-and I believe achieved their goal-of never having a majority government in power again. They just voted in the Bloc because they want more funding(other than the 30 million the gov't gave them) for culture. Some of the poorest countries in this world are known for their culture and they do not have to pay 30 million for it. The thing about Canada is that the culture here is so diversified that French is not the only culture, how do we decide which cultures get funding? If we recognize every separate culture as an independant we are financially screwed as a country!
I inderstand that Quebec may be afraid to lose its culture, and that the rest of Canada does not really have one. They do have something unique that they are trying to protect

I believe we all the the right to think, feel and say whatever we want. The other thing we should be able to do is have these feelings and not bash those who believe differently. After all, diversity and tolerance is the Canadian way-isn't it?
